Adding fresh fruits and vegetables is the first place to start. Don't eat canned fruit with syrup, that's loaded with sugar. Try to be aware of all the food that you have eaten that are white. They are full of carbohydrates which should be limited. Try to stay away from processed foods as they have a lot of hidden sugars and read the nutritional labels to help you stay on track. Think about portion size, if you can cut your amounts in half you will be surprised at the results. Sometimes we eat without thinking, being aware of what you eat in a day will help you see more clearly. Try keeping a journal, it will help. Drinking water is also very helpful, you should have a least 8 glasses a day. It will also fill you up. Stay away from sugary, carbonated beverages, they don't have any nutritional value and really pack on the calories. Try to work in at least 5 fresh fruits and vegetables a day, lean protein and whole grains.
Get up and start moving, but if you have a lot of weight to lose or haven't been active for a while, check with your doctor. You don't have to run a marathon, but walking is a great form of exercise and doesn't cost anything. Even if you can only walk for 5 to 10 minutes, it's a start. Just be consistent, it does improve. After you have walked for a while, look back at how far you have come. Besides walking there are many other ways to burn calories. Go for a swim, dance, hike or golf (no cart), try a yoga DVD. No matter what you do, if it's more than what you normally do, it counts. Try to do little things that will add to your success. Take the stairs, park as far away from the mall as possible, window shop in the mall, it's enjoyable and will burn calories. Just move more- whenever and however you can.
Today there is a lot of help if you need it. Nutritional bars, drinks and portion controlled meals are available in your local grocery store. They can be a big help, especially if you are pressed for time. If you need a kick start go to a local discount store and browse through the exercise department and find books, DVD's and even small weights. I looked for and found a diet Program tha works for me.
I hope this information was helpful to you.
