Exercising To Lose Weight - What Is The Best Exercise For Weight Loss?

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, the ideal amount of cardio exercise to lose weight you need to complete is 200 to 300 minutes per week. This exercise needs to performed at between 55% and 70% of your maximum heart rate in order to burn the maximum amount of fat for your effort.

That may seem quite a lot, but it's really only 3 to 5 hours a week, of medium intensity exercise.

What's Your Optimum Heart Rate When Doing Exercise For Weight Loss

Your maximum heart rate is defined as 220 minus your age. So if your thirty years old, your maximum heart rate would be 190 beats per minute.

So to exercise at 55% to 70% intensity, your heart rate should stay in the range of between 55% and 70% of 190 - which is 104 to 133. Keeping your heart rate in this range whilst exercising while mean you're burning the optimum amount of fat.

You are not expected to engage in five hours of cardiovascular activity at 70% of your maximum heart rate immediately. Start slow and build up gradually. For example, if you were previously sedentary, you can start with brisk walking at an exercise heart rate of 55% of your maximum heart rate three days a week, 20 minutes each time, and work upwards from there.

Progress by keeping the exercise intensity low and increasing the exercise duration or distance by about 10% per week. Once you have reached the desired frequency and exercise duration, start increasing the intensity. For example, if you were previously brisk walking, you can step up the intensity by alternating between 10 minutes of brisk walking and 5 minutes of jogging. Once you are accustomed to that, you can alternate between 10 minutes of brisk walking and 10 minutes of jogging, and so on.

Timing of Exercise

Does it matter what time during the day you exercise? Early in the morning, when the air is cool and clean, is ideal, especially if you exercise outdoors. But the overriding factor is convenience. We would be happy to find time to exercise, let alone be picky about the time of day. If you have a regular lunchtime, you may find it convenient to exercise then.

Some people prefer to exercise after work to unwind. Some finish work late or at a different time every day, so they may prefer exercising early in the morning, when the time is their own. Most people have difficulty falling asleep within two hours after exercise (due to elevated adrenaline levels), so exercising close to bedtime may not be ideal. The bottom line is: Choose a time that best fits your schedule, so that you maximize your total exercise time.

Another consideration is mealtimes. If you exercise on an empty stomach, you may feel too lethargic to exercise at the desired intensity and duration. But if you exercise soon after a meal, you would find it hard to exert yourself on a fall stomach. Generally, the most comfortable time to exercise is about two hours after a main meal.

Comfort aside, does the timing affect fat-burning? For example, if we exercise on an empty stomach, do we burn more body fat?

Our bodies have two main energy stores: the carbohydrate store (in the form of glycogen in the liver and muscles) and the fat store.

At moderate exercise intensities, the preferred fuel is carbohydrate, and when that runs out, the body will have no choice but to depend almost solely on the fat store. The body has about 2,000 kcal of carbohydrate stored up. When that is about to be used up, we feel like we've "hit the wall", as the body starts to rely heavily on the fat store, which releases energy slowly. This is why it is hard to maintain a high exercise intensity after hitting the wall.

It usually takes about 90 to 120 minutes of moderate- to high-intensity exercise (i.e. at 70% to 75°/o of the maximal aerobic capacity) before hitting the wall. However, when we are in a chronic energy deficit, our carbohydrate store is already "half empty", so we tend to hit the wall earlier. Aiming to hit the wall during routine exercise is not wise, as it is not sustainable and the total energy expenditure is not optimal over a long period.

Appetite is suppressed during and immediately after exercise, especially moderate-to high-intensity exercise. Take advantage of that. For example, if you tend to have a voracious appetite during dinner, go for a good workout just before dinner. That way, you won't eat as much for dinner. However, bear in mind that, an hour after exercise, your appetite will not only return but also increase, so going for supper more than an hour after a workout is not a good idea.

Surprising Truth About a Flat Stomach

Recently I was asked this question, "I have been working on my abs for years and cannot get the six-pack I want. My diet is very healthy. What am I doing wrong?" This question made me pause and think. Many of us continue on a path even when it's obvious that things aren't working out as planned. Sometimes it's not our approach, but our goal that needs change.

Most people believe that abdominal exercises are key to achieving a flat stomach. When results are not immediate, they think their approach is flawed. The truth is, a six-pack is not the same as a flat stomach. And a six-pack is very difficult to achieve. If you have been doing all the right things and aren't seeing the results you want it's possible that your technique is not to blame.

The Myth

Perhaps the biggest myth regarding fitness is this: simply target a specific problem area with enough exercise and you will be able to get rid of the body fat in that spot. If you have been crunching yourself silly in search of perfect abs you might have been caught up in this trap.

This myth is so widespread partly because there is a lot of marketing behind it. Browse through workout videos and check out the titles: you will see mentions of thighs, butt, legs, and several synonyms for stomachs. Popular fitness magazines perpetuate the myth by offering "5-Minute Ab-Busting" workouts and "10 Moves for Trimmer Tummies." These keep us believing that if we work harder, we can eventually get the results we want.

But the truth is that getting a six-pack is very difficult. I'm in great shape now, and I have been working out for many years but have never had a six-pack. It's not for lack of trying! After years of struggling and too many crunches to count, I finally came to realize that the goal of a perfect six-pack was not right for me.

Whew - that realization was very liberating!

What it really takes to get flat abs

Are you ready for more hard ab truths? Not only is abdominal exercise not the best way to achieve flat abs, but getting them requires a lot of determination and also something might be absolutely impossible for some people.

One secret ingredient to achieving perfect abs is heredity and some of us simply don't have the gift of good genes.

Losing lots of body fat is the real key to getting flat abs. We already know what losing fat requires:

Genes: for some, six-pack abs are not genetically feasible! But a flat stomach is within the reach of everyone.Diet: for some body types it's necessary to sustain an improbable level of fat loss to make a six-pack possible.Exercise: achieving a six-pack might require more exercise than is practical for a busy schedule. It's time to reexamine your goals and ask yourself some difficult questions.

Do you really want a six-pack? Is that what you're really after?Can you work as hard as needed to achieve this goal? Will it change your life?What if you decide let go of this goal? What would happen if you focus on other pursuits?

You are not a failure if you don't reach a goal that was arguably impossible from the start. The real truth is, our bodies work as part of a whole, not as independent pieces. If we can accept this fact, it is a big step toward letting go of the impossible ideal and working toward a more realistic idea of perfection. It's okay to redefine what perfection means to you.

In fact, folks that have 'perfection' as one of their standards really doesn't have a standard at all, since there's no such thing as perfection!

So I repeat: is a 'six-pack' what you're really after? Or does being fit, healthy, and vital for long-term sound better to you?

So many moms get caught up in the marketing campaigns of advertisers and images of air-brushed twenty-somethings that they forget that it is they are truly after. Are you going to be a better mom with a six-pack?

Or will you be a better mom if you are healthy, fit, and vital, with enough energy to chase your kids around the park and have more than enough energy for your husband after the kids are asleep? How will it feel to know that you've got this part of your life totally handled?

Remember first outline what you want, and then figure out why you want it. What will it give you? Your reasons come first, and actions come second. Don't get sucked into someone else's ideas of what a 'perfect mom' should be, because the minute you do that, you're sunk. If you don't have an agenda for your life, your kids, your health, I guarantee someone else will.

And that someone else will be not only running your life but raising your kids and after the dream of 'someday'. I have news for you - the road to someday leads to a town called 'nowhere'. So define what you want now, and make it a believable goal for you that you can really see yourself as achieving.

From one mom to another - I want you to succeed in making your dreams come true, because I know we often put the needs of our kids and husbands ahead of our own. The trick isn't to devote every minute you have to getting yourself into shape - that's ridiculous! Moms simply don't have the time, energy, or ability at this stage in their lives. Rather, the idea here is to implement a couple of easy strategies that you can quickly incorporate into your usual routine so that you take consistent action everyday toward your goal. We're not going to rearrange your life and create this enormous upheaval - you've already got a number of things in your life that are working great. Why mess with that? We're just going to set up a couple of simple things that if you do them consistently will have a lasting impact on your weight goal.

There's no doubt about it that more and more people today are using intermittent fasting for weight loss. If you're not sure what intermittent fasting is it's basically when you strategically use periods of fasting to force your body into burning fat as a fuel source. I also personally prefer to use Sundays as my fasting days because I have the least amount of interaction with society because once again it's very easy to become irritable. Be sure to take your BCAA's throughout the day in 5-10 gram servings like you would in place for regular meals. Eventually after you have successfully completed the 24 hours fasts you can progress to more advanced methods of intermittent fasting such as using multiple ones throughout the week.

Intermittent fasting isn't going to be for everyone but if you're serious about getting some real results then this will definitely boost them. Everyone should still learn the basics of a healthy diet and exercise program. You can definitely workout on your fasting days to enhance the fat loss but it will be extremely difficult for many to muster the energy to do so. Overall just make sure you plan ahead prior to your fasting day as it will be instrumental in your success with the program.

If you are someone who thinks skipping breakfast will help you lose weight, you're not alone. I hear this from my clients time and again; many believe that skipping breakfast is a great way to cut calories and lose weight quicker. However, studies show that eating breakfast actually helps weight loss and is associated with better weight control over time.

Think of it this way - when you skip breakfast your body is fasting for 15 to 20 hours. This means that you're not producing the enzymes needed to break down stored body fat - and lose weight. And to make it worse, skipping breakfast can cause you to experience cravings that lead you to eat more calories than someone who has breakfast. This happens because skipping breakfast causes your metabolic rate to slow down and blood sugar to drop. As a result, you become very hungry and have less energy. Fat Burning Breakfast # 3.

Scrambled Egg Wrap

1 small light whole wheat wrap

1 scrambled egg

1 tablespoon low fat shredded cheese

1 tablespoon salsa

Choose a wrap that is less than 125 calories with at least 5 grams of fiber and 5 grams protein (example: Flatout Light Original; La Tortilla Factory Smart and Delicious Low Carb High Fiber Tortilla; Mission Low Carb Fajita Tortilla). Scramble egg in microwave or non-stick pan with cooking spray. Place egg in whole-wheat wrap, top with your favorite low fat shredded cheese and salsa.

Fat-Burning Breakfast # 4.

Banana-Nut Oatmeal

½ cup rolled oats

1 cup water

1 small banana, sliced

1 tablespoon chopped pecans or walnuts

1 teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg

Combine oats in a microwave-safe bowl or mug. Microwave on HIGH 3 minutes or follow package directions to cook on stovetop. Top with banana, nuts and spice.

Fat-Burning Breakfast # 5.

Very Fruity Smoothie

1 cup pineapple chunks

1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries

6 oz. low fat vanilla Greek yogurt

Few ice cubes

Choose low fat Greek-style that's less than 130 calories with at least 10 grams protein per 6 oz. (examples: Chobani; Fage; Yoplait). Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Some Secrets to Making Healthier Desserts, From a Former Round Person

I shrieked in horror at the chubby person in my bathroom as I stepped out of the shower. It took only a moment for my eyes to clear, and then I realized that it was only my round reflection in the full-length mirror.

Then I yelped a second time at how much weight I had apparently gained. It was diet time.

At first, I hung my head in despair at the thought of having to say goodbye to my dear old, sugary friends and switching to healthier desserts. But it was time to start eating better and cutting calories, so I summoned the courage to turn the spotlight on my dessert addiction.

I found myself sometimes eating more calories at dessert than I consumed from the entire main course!

Don't Give Up on Desserts, There's Hope!

Many people simply cut out desserts all together. That just plain stinks. There was no way I could go cold turkey and give up my favorite part of a meal.

I started looking around, experimenting with recipes, and happily discovered that there are many delicious alternatives to my favorite high-fat, carbohydrate-laden, dessert dishes. A healthier dessert does not have to taste like cardboard with air icing!

In desserts, fats and sugars are the ingredients that really pile up the calories. Replacing those things with healthier alternatives and adding ingredients like fruits and whole grains to your recipes will help make dessert better for you and less of a guilty pleasure.

At the market, if you feel compelled to buy a drool-inducing packaged dessert, glance at the nutritional information label first. See how much each serving contains of your recommended daily allowance of fat. If it is a high percentage, put the package down, walk slowly away and over to the fresh fruit aisle.

Also, always take note of the serving size and "number of servings" per container. Sometimes what you might think is a single serving actually is two or more!

Healthier Dessert Recipes Are Easy to Find

In the olden days, there were amazing places called "libraries" and "book stores" that lent out or sold magical, strange things called "books". Surprisingly, unimaginable amounts of these "books" still exist, with thousands upon thousands of them available that contain recipes for low-calorie desserts.

Waddle down to your local book store or library - they still exist - and you will find treasure troves of healthy recipe books.

Now in this millennium, we have the beloved internet literally at our fingertips. It is very easy to hop on your search engine of choice and find a bajillion healthier dessert recipes for treats that taste great and are better for you. Search for terms like "healthy dessert" or "low-calorie dessert recipes".

Try Some Lower Calorie Substitutions

When making your own desserts from higher calorie recipes, it is possible to substitute some of the standard ingredients with lower calorie alternatives. For example, in place of butter, oil, or margarine you can sometimes use applesauce or another fruit purée.

You can get away with substituting low-fat or skim milk for whole milk or cream at times. Experiment with lower calorie ingredient alternatives, and come up with your own healthier recipes.

If you are trying your hardest to diet, lose weight and eat the right foods all the time, it can be a real pain. But if you look in the right places for healthier recipes, and are not afraid to experiment with different ingredients, you can happily include lower calorie desserts into your meals.

Lose Weight Eating Out With Mindful Eating

We all know that it's difficult to lose weight eating out, as people take in more calories, more fat, when they eat out than when they eat at home. If you're trying to stay healthy by keeping your weight under control, consuming 200 to 300 extra calories every time you eat out is not going to help. But mindful eating might help...

Keeping your attention on the experience of eating- the color, presentation, texture and smell of the food before you might just be the key to controlling calories when you're out at a favorite restaurant.

A new study finds older women who used mindful eating techniques at restaurants lost on average 4 pounds in 6 weeks, even though their intention was only to maintain their current weight. Wow.

These women also consumed fewer calories and grams of fat each day, and were more able to stick with their goal to lose (or maintain) their weight.

The subjects were 35 women (aged 40 to 59) in the Austin Texas area who ate out a minimum of three times per week. About 50% of the subjects took part in a 6 week mindful eating program that was intended to prevent weight gain, while the others served as a control group.

Those in the mindful eating group also received six weekly sessions, two hours in length that focused on...

- Talking about the general principles involved in managing weight.
- Setting personal weekly weight goals.
- Planning what to eat at favorite restaurants taking into account both calorie and fat info.
- Being able to visualize proper portion sizes.

- Instruction on mindful eating meditation, that is, being aware of the look, smell and feel of the food so that you get the maximum enjoyment and satisfaction with a smaller portion AND a guided mindfulness meditation that fosters relaxation and focuses awareness on hunger, flavor, fullness and your own eating triggers.

By the study end the women who did the mindful eating lost 3.7 pounds, on average, while the control group didn't experience any sizable weight loss.

What's more, those undertaking the mindful eating cut their daily intake by almost 297 calories... but only 124 of those calories were accounted for when eating out. This means that fewer calories were consumed at home too.

The frequency with which the subjects ate out didn't change throughout the study period, so this tells us that those who practiced the mindful eating had more success managing their weight while following their usual habits.

The research team believes the study shows the need to come up with creative solutions to keeping weight off. Going beyond eat less, exercise more, to finding real, practical approaches to addressing today's weight loss challenges. One of these may be giving people skills such as mindfulness eating that help them manage the amount of calories they take in when in those high risk, calorie packed places like restaurants.

A Low Carb Diet For Long Term Success

The way to do this is to have an occasional day of eating higher carbs. This is known as a re-feed day, and it has the effect of giving your metabolism a boost, so that when you return to eating low carbs you can once again start burning off fat and losing weight effectively. You may also benefit from having two or three re-feed days in a row occasionally too.

So if you eat low carbs for six days each week, and then on the seventh day eat higher carbs, you will get much better results long term.

On your low carb days you would eat mostly protein foods with vegetables. You can eat as many vegetables as you want. But have some fruit, nuts and beans occasionally too, as these will provide a small amount of carbs, because you don't want to cut them out entirely.

Then on your high carb days, reduce your fat intake somewhat and add in some starchy carbs, like whole grain bread and cereals, oats, brown rice, potatoes etc.

And do bear in mind that, whilst fats are your main energy source on this type of diet, you should only eat these in moderation, and ensure they come mostly from healthy food sources.

Also, as with any weight loss plan, it's important to drink plenty of water, as this is required to flush away all the toxins that will be released as your fat cells are broken down to be used as energy.

If you follow a low carb diet in this way you'll find it an easy, enjoyable and highly effective way to lose weight - and more importantly you'll keep it off too.

What You Should Be Eating on the Slow-Carb Diet

One of the most common questions asked regarding the 4 Hour Body's slow-carb diet is "Can I eat this?" The actual list mentioned in the book is pretty small, but it's not exhaustive. This list won't be exhaustive either, but it'll get you a good way down the road.

As you're starting out on this fat-loss journey, it'll be important to have a solid understanding of the food groups allowed so you can combine things from each in order to make some really great slow-carb recipes.

There are three main food groups on the slow-carb diet. To construct a faithful slow-carb meal, pick at least one item from each category.

Protein

Protein is the most important food group on the 4 hour body diet. If you don't eat enough protein, you won't be full enough, and you'll crave things you shouldn't have. There is also one more that Tim Ferriss doesn't talk about much, but I think its important to mention it.

Fats

Good fats are essential to helping you lose fat. It doesn't sound logical, but fat isn't what makes you fat. Fat is actually what your body likes to burn (why else would it convert excess calories to fat...). It's the only macro-nutrient that doesn't cause an insulin response, and low insulin levels is what keeps the fat melting off of your midsection.

Get delicious fats from things like avocados, olive oil, coconut milk (unsweetened, full-fat), and coconut oil. Seeds and nuts are also nice and fatty, but don't go overboard. Abusing them will stall weight loss, and they contain more omega-6 fats that you generally want to limit (since it's so high in today's diet anyway). If you're eating organic, grass-fed meats, don't bother cutting off the fat either. It'll have good omega-3 fats that do your body good.

Let's now take a look at 'basic metabolic rate' (or BMR in short). This is the smallest amount of calories that you need in a day for your body to carry out vital bodily functions such as breathing, cell growth, circulating blood, and the like. The value of basic metabolic rate is dependent on a number of parameters like height, weight, gender, age, and how active a person is. The basic metabolic rate is different from one individual to another.

About 75% of the food we eat is used for basic metabolic rate, which means, cutting down on food intake cannot be relied on to lose weight. This is because our body has its basic metabolic rate to fulfill no matter what. If we starve ourselves, our body will respond by slowing down our metabolism in order to survive. Hence, less-calories are burned, while the rest of the calories are stored as fat. This is the exact opposite of what we want!

So that is why attempting to change your metabolism rate or limiting your food intake is not the answer to your weight loss concern.
